As reported, a 29-year-old man, living in Germany, drowned early Saturday afternoon just off the shore of Lake Constance in Bregenz. The resuscitation attempts were disrupted by numerous onlookers.
The rescue chain actually worked perfectly: Only nine minutes after the alarm went off, the water rescue divers were able to rescue the lifeless man from Lake Constance. Earlier, his partner and their two children had failed in this attempt – which was due to the fact that Lake Constance drops steeply at this point, despite being close to the shore, so that the drowning man disappeared from view within a few seconds. After the rescue, the emergency services immediately started resuscitating the victim.
Even parents with children were among the spectators
The helpers’ work was, however, hampered by numerous spectators who, without any sensitivity, followed the struggle between life and death from close by; some even recorded the tragic moments on their mobile phones. Particularly shocking: there were also many small children among the spectators – and their parents stood next to them.
Manuel Winkel, who led the water rescue operation, has absolutely no understanding of such behavior: “If there are so many spectators on site, that is of course very disruptive and that is very stressful for the emergency services. Actually, you should concentrate, you should need space – and instead people spread out everywhere,” he said angrily to ORF Vorarlberg.
Rescuers eventually tried to resuscitate the 29-year-old until he was taken to nearby Bregenz State Hospital, but there they could only determine that the man was dead.
