A monument in the city of Sichuan, China, was leveled in a controlled explosion last week.
The eight-story Wenhua Tower was completed in 2006. In 2023, it was classified as a monument.
Maintenance no longer possible
During a recent inspection, authorities discovered significant safety deficiencies in the 56-meter-high structure.
City planner Chen Yilan told the Global Times that the demolition of the tower was a “regrettable fact” because it embodied “local cultural and historical characteristics”.
It was a nine-story, 56-meter-high building characterized by the octagonal aesthetics of ancient Chinese architecture.
