According to reports on Russian Telegram channels, Ukrainian troops attempted to breach the border with the Belgorod region. According to the Mash channel, about 500 Ukrainian soldiers attacked border crossings in Nekhoteyevka and Shebekino on Tuesday. Belgorod borders Ukraine and Russia’s Kursk region, where Ukrainian troops made a surprise advance on August 6.
For his part, Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov confirmed on Telegram “information that the enemy is trying to break through the border of the Belgorod region.” The situation was “difficult,” he wrote, but “under control.”
Support for mercenaries from Poland, Georgia and the US
As the Telegram channel Mash further reported, the Ukrainian soldiers at Shebekino were allegedly fired upon by Russian helicopters. Accordingly, mercenaries from Poland, Georgia and the US also fought in the Ukrainian units.
The SHOT telegram channel reported attacks by Ukrainian troops with eight armored vehicles near Nekhoteyevka. They were pushed back by Russian artillery and airstrikes. The channel wrote that there was no fighting near the Russian border town of Shebekino itself, but that Ukrainian troops entered the nearby Russian-occupied Ukrainian town of Vovchansk (Russian: Volchansk).
The area where the fighting will take place is north of the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, where the Ukrainian side of the border is largely controlled by Russian forces, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). It is about 200 km southeast of the areas in Russia’s Kursk Oblast where Ukrainian forces last crossed into Russia.
