At a popular campsite in the Australian state of Queensland, two brazen cassowaries are increasingly worrying authorities. They are not afraid of humans, venturing dangerously close to tourists and even stealing food from their hands.
“We observed the two flightless birds roaming the campsite at Murray Falls in Girramay National Park in search of readily available food,” explains game warden Alex Diczbalis.
The animals have recently gone so far as to steal food directly from the hands or plates of visitors, Australian broadcaster ABC reported.
This behavior suggests that the two cassowaries (Casuarius casuarius) see humans at the site as a reliable food source. However, this development could have serious consequences.
Although the prehistoric-looking animals rarely attack humans, they can cause potentially fatal injuries if threatened, especially to children.
“Claw works as a stabbing weapon”
Although they are not aggressive by nature, they can panic and defend themselves if they feel threatened, environmental scientist Peter Valentine explained, according to ‘ntv’. “Their feet are equipped with highly developed claws that can be used as stabbing weapons.”
