There are attacks on board planes almost every week. The number of cases of violence has increased sharply this summer, says Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary. To improve the situation, he is now calling for a drink limit before departure.
Passengers must be able to buy a maximum of two drinks per boarding pass at the airport. “It is not easy for airlines to identify drunk people at the gate, especially if they are boarding with two or three others. As long as they can stand and move, they will get through. Misbehavior only occurs when the plane is taking off,” the Ryanair boss explains.
“We don’t allow people to drink and drive, and yet we continue to put them on planes at 33,000 feet (the equivalent of 10,058.4 metres),” said the boss of the Irish budget airline. Alcohol-related incidents are particularly common on flights from Britain to so-called party destinations such as Ibiza or some Greek islands.
Days with delays are the worst
In July, a British tourist was given a suspended prison sentence for assault. He groped a stewardess on a Ryanair flight from Newcastle to Mallorca. There have also been problems on flights from Ireland and Germany. One reason for the increase in attacks is the combination of alcohol with “tablets and powder,” O’Leary said.
The hardest days are the days with a lot of delays. “People hang around the airports and drink alcohol.” You can pass the time better with coffee or tea. ‘This is not a drunken trip.’
