Young people are increasingly using condoms for sex less often, according to a new report from the World Health Organization (WHO), which surveyed tens of thousands of 15-year-olds from 42 countries and regions in Europe, Central Asia and Canada.
The proportion of boys who reported having used condoms during their last sex fell from 70 (2014) to 61 percent, and among girls from 63 to 57. Almost a third did not use a condom or contraception during their last sexual intercourse – Pill.
This is a worrying finding for WHO, as it puts many young people at significant risk of sexually transmitted infections and pregnancy. But that’s not surprising. In many countries, age-appropriate sex education is still neglected, says WHO Regional Director Hans Kluge. Where it does exist, it has come under false attack in recent years for promoting sexual behavior.
Information and safe places
Comprehensive sex education is key to making informed decisions about sex, says the report’s lead author, András Költo from the University of Galway. As well as information, young people need safe spaces to talk about topics such as sexual orientation and intimate relationships.
