Little Mathilda was in a hurry! During a lightning birth in Gratwein-Straßengel, Styria, the father unexpectedly became a midwife. He was helped by a Red Cross worker who spoke to him on the phone. Mother and baby are doing well!
With the words “Please come quickly, my wife is having a baby and the head is already visible”, an emergency call was received at the rescue control center of the Styrian Red Cross in the early morning hours of September 24. The call came from Nils Lietzow-Wellenhof from Gratwein-Straßengel, north of Graz. The rescue workers were immediately sent to the given address. Coincidentally, the vehicle of the Red Cross from Graz-Environment was in the region, but they still did not arrive in time.
Red Cross provided telephone assistance
Because little Mathilda wanted to see the light of day right away! And so the father became a midwife: “It was very exciting for me because I had never experienced such a situation. Nevertheless, it was a very special experience to accompany your own daughter into the world!”, says father Nils Lietzow-Wellenhof. On the one hand, he was supported by his mother-in-law, who was present at the young parents’ house at the time. Above all, he was helped by Florian Ofner from the Styrian Rescue Center, who guided the young father through the birth by telephone and gave him first aid instructions. Together, you were able to accompany Mathilda in life.
When the first emergency vehicle arrived, the baby had already been born. The mother and child then received first aid from the rescue team and the emergency physician and were taken to the University Hospital in Graz. “Assisting in a birth over the phone is not an everyday occurrence for us either,” says Florian Ofner. “Of course, we are also trained and prepared for these types of situations. One of our core tasks is to accompany people who call an emergency number in all conceivable situations and to care for them until our emergency services arrive and can take over the operation on site. Nevertheless, I was happy when I heard the baby crying on the phone,” says Florian Ofner about this special mission.
Little Mathilda weighed 4190 grams after birth and was 54 cm long. The mother, Anna Lietzow-Wellenhof, and the baby are doing very well and have now been able to leave the hospital.
