Two men with previous convictions broke several windows in the outdoor pool in Mauthausen (Upper Austria) to get cash. The leisure oasis had to remain closed during the cleaning work despite the heat wave. The thieves took the employees’ tips.
Two burglars left a field of broken glass in the outdoor pool of Mauthausen. The two acquaintances – a 22-year-old from St. Georgen/G. and a 23-year-old neighbor – were after money and drinks on Thursday evening and smashed the windows of the cash register and the kiosk.
No cash
They probably didn’t steal much because there was no cash in the outdoor pool at night, says lifeguard Werner Großauer. The burglars only took the contents of the tip box, which they were able to pick up in the area a short time later and were taken to Linz prison. At the time, in addition to stolen goods, they also had burglary tools and cannabis herb with them.
The bathroom had to remain closed
In order not to endanger the swimmers with the broken glass and to allow forensic investigators to work undisturbed, the outdoor pool remained closed until 1 p.m. the day after the crime. “We had to turn a few people away, but everyone was very understanding,” said Großauer.
Damage greater than loot
Both windows have now been replaced, the costs for this are still unclear. However, it is likely that they will far exceed the value of the stolen goods. The loss of the tip hurts, but “we will earn it back by September 8,” says the lifeguard combatively. Then this season will be over and the preparations for the wintering will begin.
