Concealed explosives – demining Ukraine will take at least 10 years

Date:

Mines kill civilians every day in Ukraine. There is an insidious death lurking in every field. As the British secret service now reports, it will take at least ten years to completely rid the country of the explosives.

With the arrival of spring and increased agricultural activity in Ukraine, the likelihood of stepping on a mine increases again. The regions of Kharkov and Kherson, formerly occupied by Russia, were hardest hit. The Ukrainian head of state Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared in March that almost a third (!) of the Ukrainian land area is in danger from mines and unexploded ordnance.

More than 750 civilians have already been killed by mines
According to the secret service, mines in Ukraine have killed more than 750 civilians since the beginning of the Russian offensive war. Every eighth victim is a child. Therefore, children do not recognize explosives as such and mistake them for toys.

It would take about ten years for the country to be completely demined again. Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Resnikov said a week ago that the complete demining of Ukraine would take about 30 years and would require about 5,000 specialists.

Russian disinformation
The British Ministry of Defense has published daily information on the course of the war since the beginning of the Russian offensive war against Ukraine, citing intelligence information. With this, the British government wants to both counter the Russian image and keep allies in line. Moscow accuses London of a disinformation campaign.

Anti-personnel mines banned internationally
The so-called Ottawa Convention of 1997 prohibits the production, stockpiling and use of certain types of mines aimed at humans. However, Russia and China have not signed this treaty.
