A state of emergency has been declared in the Greek port city of Volos due to the huge amounts of dead fish in the waters. Almost 60 tons of fish waste were removed on Tuesday alone.
The month-long measure aims to provide government support for cleaning up the coast and rivers.
The environmental disaster is the result of flooding caused by heavy rains in the Thessaly region last year. A lake that had been drained decades ago filled with water and large areas were submerged.
The water level in the lake has dropped
Since then, the water level in the lake has dropped dramatically, and the freshwater fish living there have flown down rivers towards Volos and eventually into the Pagasetic Gulf, where they died in the salt water.
Nearly 60 tons of fish waste removed
On Tuesday alone, helpers collected 57 tonnes of dead fish from beaches around Volos, and clean-up efforts continued on Saturday.
Special nets were installed at the mouth of the Xiria River to contain the huge quantities of dead fish.
