A helicopter with 22 people on board disappeared over Russia’s Kamchatka region in the east of the country. The Mi-8 helicopter disappeared from radar screens on Saturday, the regional governor said on the online service Telegram.
A flight over the area initially failed to find evidence of the machine because visibility was poor. Authorities said two helicopters and search teams were sent to the suspected crash site on the Kamchatka Peninsula.
The peninsula is known for its rugged landscape, and many tourists take helicopter tours.
The Mi-8 is a Soviet-made helicopter. Accidents keep happening with the outdated machines. Three years ago, a helicopter of this type crashed into a lake on the Kamchatka Peninsula. Eight people were killed.
