For days, human rights activists have been warning of the execution of several controversial death sentences. Those threatened include three protesters accused by the judiciary of killing security forces during the November nationwide protests. More than 200 people will have been executed in Iran by 2023, according to the UN.
Kurdish death leads to protests
The wave of protests in the autumn was triggered by the death of the young Iranian Kurd Jina Mahsa Amini. She died in police custody in mid-September after being arrested by the vice squad for disobeying Islamic dress codes. Her death sparked the worst protests in decades.
