The climate activists of the “Last Generation” group caused enormous traffic disruption on the Wiener Ring on Friday morning. Two participants raised their hands in the middle of the road.
The unannounced action started at 8.45 am. In front of the main building of the University of Vienna, the activists called on the federal government to “recognize the indisputable scientific facts about the climate crisis and end the destruction of fossils,” the group said.
Every child has the right to the best possible development, intergenerational equality must be preserved, the participants demanded: “Why are our politicians finally not doing their job and protecting our livelihood?” A ban on fracking is the minimum “to protect our groundwater from industry and the Ministry of Economic Affairs,” explains activist Marina Hagen-Canaval.
Huge traffic jams caused on the Ring
The police arrived with several patrol cars. The Vienna professional rescue service was also ordered to look after the activists and take their hands off the road. Due to the blockade, traffic on the Ring largely came to a standstill. Public transport was also affected.
