The 63-year-old driver of the Porsche suddenly noticed a burning smell in Gunskirchen (Upper Austria) and had the presence of mind to steer his vehicle from the neighborhood street to a side street. Shortly afterwards, the classic car was completely on fire and completely destroyed by the flames.
“The driver noticed a burning smell. He then turned off the district road. When he came to a stop, he saw flames coming from the engine compartment. A short time later, the entire vehicle was completely on fire.” This is how Günther Weissenböck, commander of the Fernreith fire brigade, describes the spectacular operation on Sunday morning in Gunskirchen.
Most importantly, the Porsche driver (63) from Krenglbach was able to escape from his car in time, fortunately no one was injured. However, the vehicle – a Porsche 928 S4 from 1988 and therefore a classic – burned out completely and was destroyed by the flames.
A car parked about four metres away from the classic car was also damaged by the intense heat of the fire. The possible cause of the fire is a technical defect; it is suspected that it was a cable fire.
Traffic on one lane only
Three fire brigades from Gunskirchen, Fernreith and Am Irrach with about 30 Florianis were called to extinguish the fire and were able to quickly control the fire. As a result of the fire, the L1249 Grünbachtalstrasse near Au near Sirfling was only passable on one lane for about 45 minutes and the fire brigade led the traffic alternately.
