A “controlled explosion” on a film set in London went seriously out of control on Saturday, causing a fire. Flames destroyed a van and damaged two other vehicles in the incident near the famous O2 Arena.
Frightened residents saw a fireball and took to social media to report the noise and smoke rising over the Thames, before police told callers the explosion was part of a film shoot.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) said 25 firefighters and four fire engines were sent to the scene of the accident near Dock Road in Silvertown at 7.51pm local time.
Photos posted on social media showed a burning red truck with the words “BBC World News” on the trailer. However, the BBC has confirmed that BBC News was not involved in the incident.
Fire Department: Explosion got out of control
“There is no danger to the public,” the Metropolitan Police said of the fire in an open space opposite the venue. The explosion on the film set got out of control.
A van was destroyed by the fire, a car and a truck were significantly damaged, but the fire was under control by 9:02 p.m., the LFB statement said. There were no reports of injuries.
“Heard three loud bangs”
Neighbours expressed their shock and amazement following the fire, with one calling the scene a “carnage” on social media. One told BBC News he was sitting at his computer when he heard three loud bangs. When he looked out of the window he saw a huge cloud of black smoke and flames shooting into the sky.
