Eleven people were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a school building in the Gaza Strip on Sunday, according to Palestinian reports. The victims included a woman and a girl, the spokesman for the civil protection authority in the Palestinian territory said.
The school was housing Palestinian displaced people. The attack targeted a Hamas police post inside the building, a Gaza health official said.
Hamas command center targeted
However, the Israeli military said it had targeted “Hamas terrorists” who had set up a command center on the former school grounds.
The war in the Gaza Strip was triggered by a major attack on Israel by Hamas fighters and other Palestinian militant groups on October 7. According to Israeli figures, 1,205 people were killed in the Gaza Strip and 251 others taken hostage.
Tens of thousands dead since October
In response to the Hamas attack, Israel has since launched a large-scale military operation in the Gaza Strip. According to Hamas figures, which cannot be independently verified, more than 40,700 people have been killed since October.
