In Greece, mobile phones are strictly prohibited during lessons at the start of the new school year. “The motto is: keep your mobile phone in your school bag,” Education Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis said. Anyone who breaks this rule will be expelled from school for a day.
Repeated violations risk excluding you from class for several days. Anyone who videotapes their classmates or teachers without permission can, in the most drastic cases, be expelled from school altogether and then have to move to another school.
The head of government also supports the guidelines
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis also announced tougher treatment of students using mobile phones in class, during a mid-week meeting of the Council of Ministers, broadcast on radio.
“We don’t necessarily aim to ensure 100 percent compliance from the start, but we want to explain to children, parents and teachers why it is important that the student is absolutely committed to the educational process at school,” Mitsotakis said.
It is the first time in Greece that the use of mobile phones in the classroom has been punished with severe penalties. Until now, there was a general ban on their use. But teachers could not enforce it and the ban on mobile phones was relaxed – until the government took another step. A spokesman for the union of secondary school teachers (OLME) said on the radio that it is important to convince students to turn off their mobile phones and not just threaten them with punishment.
