The new school year started Monday for half a million pupils in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland. This includes over 42,000 Tafelclass pupils who are in a classroom for the first time.
Children and young people in the other federal states, on the other hand, still have a week of vacation. According to an estimate by Statistics Austria, a total of 98,000 children will experience their first lesson in primary school this year, which corresponds to an increase of 0.6 percent compared to the previous year. In total, the number of students grew by 0.9 percent to 1.16 million.
School started on Monday for 508,000 children and young people in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland, and 42,500 primary school pupils in the three states will be in class for the first time.
On September 9, the holiday and kindergarten period will come to an end for the 656,000 pupils in Carinthia, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Tyrol and Vorarlberg – including 55,500 pupils from the Taferl class.
Just like last school year, primary schools are expected to grow their student numbers by 1.7 percent, and local secondary schools should also see an equally large increase.
The number of vocational schools remains the same
For special education, an increase of 0.5 percent is estimated and for polytechnic schools three percent. For the AHS, an increase of 0.4 percent is assumed and for the BMHS a decrease of 0.4 percent. The number of students in vocational education must remain the same.
