Netanyahu under pressure – Israel: General strike over hostage deal begins

Date:

A major anti-government protest strike has begun in Israel after the bodies of six Hamas hostages were found in the Gaza Strip. Numerous cities and towns joined the protest, but others refused because they are closer to the right-wing government of Benjamin Netanyahu.

Already on Sunday night, hundreds of thousands (see video above) demanded an immediate deal with the Islamist terrorist organization Hamas in the largest mass protests since the Gaza war began nearly 11 months ago. 280,000 protesters blocked streets in Tel Aviv, demanding a ceasefire with Hamas to rescue the remaining hostages.

The trade union confederation announced on Sunday that it wants to impose a one-day shutdown in the country, in an effort to increase pressure on Prime Minister Netanyahu to agree to a deal to release the remaining hostages.

Tel Aviv airport operations disrupted
In many cities, kindergartens, banks and authorities, among other things, remained closed. Public transport was also affected. Air traffic at Ben Gurion International Airport near Tel Aviv reportedly experienced disruptions and delays, despite authorities saying everything was proceeding as planned.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich wanted to prevent the general strike with an injunction, because it was a “political strike”. The trade union federation Histadrut then informed the labor court that the strike would be shortened.

Strike twelve hours shorter than planned
It is now due to end at 6pm local time (5pm CEST), 12 hours earlier than planned, it is said. Smotrich, like far-right police minister Itamar Ben Gvir, has rejected concessions to the Hamas terrorist militia and has repeatedly threatened Prime Minister Netanyahu with the collapse of the government.

Six dead hostages discovered in tunnel
The Israeli military announced Sunday morning that six bodies of Hamas hostages had recently been discovered in an underground tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip. Israel’s Health Ministry said, according to media reports, that the hostages were shot at close range about 48 to 72 hours before the bodies were autopsied.

However, a spokesman for the militant Palestinian organization Hamas said the hostages had been killed as a result of Israeli bombardments.
