In parts of Australia, extreme weather conditions with heavy rain and storms have led to severe flooding and widespread power outages. In Tasmania and the state of Victoria including the metropolitan city of Melbourne, more than 100,000 people were temporarily without power.
The storms hit southern parts of the country hard. On the island of Tasmania, authorities issued evacuation orders for six towns around the Derwent River. The National Weather Service had previously issued a flood warning for the river.
“Absolutely terrible wind”
In Tasmania and the state of Victoria, which includes the metropolis of Melbourne, more than 100,000 people were temporarily without power, the broadcaster ABC reported. Chris Kilby, a farmer from Westwood in northern Tasmania, spoke of “absolutely horrendous winds”.
63-year-old dies in New South Wales
The storm ripped off roofs and uprooted trees. A 63-year-old woman died when a tree crashed into a holiday home in Moama, on the New South Wales-Victoria border.
Dozens of flights cancelled in Sydney
Sydney was also hit, with dozens of flights cancelled at the city’s airport due to the storm, with only one runway open for use, a Sydney Airport spokesperson told Sky News Australia.
Heat records in the north and west
However, the extreme weather in Western Australia and the Northern Territory is very different, with new seasonal heat records recently broken here – it is currently winter down under.
In the Kimberley region, popular with tourists, the weather station in Yampi Sound measured 41.5 degrees last week, the highest value ever recorded for this time of year.
Overall, August was the warmest month in Australia since records began, according to weather service Weatherzone, with the country being particularly affected by the effects of climate change.
