Have these four young defendants confused their criminal trial with a club night? The female quartet appears in full style at the Vienna Regional Court, where they must answer for robbing guests in an Airbnb. Their remorse for the crime is about to end.
“What are you doing at the moment?” was the opening question of Judge Alexandra Skrdla to one of the four young women accused. “Nothing,” is the sharp answer. “What does ‘nothing’ mean? What do you live on?” – “From the MA40.” The 19-year-old stateless woman clearly has no ambition to find a job.
The other defendants – a 17-year-old German, a 20-year-old Hungarian and a 17-year-old Serbian – sound the same. At least two of them indicate that they want to start an AMS education soon. The charge for which the chic quartet must answer: theft, with a prison sentence of one to ten years for the adult women and half that for the minors. They come to the trial as if they are going to a club: heavily made up, high heels, designer bags hanging from their shoulders.
“We wanted to make them better”
Chewing gum and using their charges as fans, they sit down before the judge. Every now and then they smile at each other, as if the criminal proceedings are a real party. On May 2, 2024, the four were sent by a certain Assad to an Airbnb in the 18th arrondissement, which he apparently rented out. “He said he had annoying guests from Linz and whether we could help them check in,” says the first defendant. Even before they left, the women decided “we want to get rid of these annoying women!”
“What does ‘do’ mean to you?” the prosecutor wants to know. Answer: “Well, that we want to take their things. The valuables.” Apparently, Assad told them that the guests had 3,500 euros with them. “The women said they had nothing,” the second defendant explains, “then the rooms were searched. And we threatened them.” The Serb showed a fake gun. She also forced one victim to hand over her smartphone: “I kicked her in the face,” she admits.
“I had a bad phone at the time and wanted a new one. “For me it was the easiest way because I can’t afford a new mobile phone,” one of the perpetrators argues dryly. “I can’t afford a Porsche and therefore can’t take someone else’s,” Mrs. Rat understandably gradually loses patience with the four women who came to their trial in general. The loot was at least manageable: in addition to the mobile phone, there was a small amount of money, jewelry, cigarettes, a 20 euro receipt and a debit card from the victims, who are themselves teenagers. The Airbnb guests who were attacked were two young couples from Linz.
All four get off with suspended sentences
Only two of the four defendants apologized. A 17-year-old, represented by Roland Friis, gave the victim at least 20 euros to compensate for some of the damage. She had resold AirPods for 200 euros that she had stolen for 80 euros. The four were not legally sentenced to ten, twelve, eighteen and twenty months suspended prison sentences and are still at large.
