Broken down bus – coincidence prevents tunnel fire inferno on A11

Date:

Shortly before the entrance to the Karawanken tunnel, a carriage caught fire on Tuesday afternoon. The driver wanted to transport the multi-ton monster from Germany via Austria to Slovenia, despite the desolate situation.

The emergency services, police and fire brigade of Asfinag probably could not believe their eyes when they had to carry out an operation in front of the portal of the Karawanken tunnel on Tuesday afternoon. A coach that was to be transported from Germany via Austria to Slovenia stopped there shortly after the toll station and caught fire.

Bus driver did not pass thermal scanner!
“It is a miracle that the bus came to a standstill in front of the tunnel for technical reasons. The driver, who fortunately was traveling alone because it was a transfer trip, also avoided the required thermal scanner for the Karawanken tunnel with the vehicle, which would have detected overheating of the engine and thus the danger,” says Hubert Madritsch, commander of the FF St. Jakob im Rosental.

The monster, weighing several tons, miraculously came to a stop just before the tunnel portal because the engine overheated and then caught fire. Asfinag employees and police officers were able to control the fire with hand fire extinguishers. The driver was also able to save himself.

Catastrophe averted
The St. Jakob fire brigade carried out subsequent extinguishing work. FF commander Madritsch: “If the bus had been just a few hundred meters further – and had driven into the tunnel, the situation would have looked very different.”
