Another serious alpine accident! A 66-year-old man from Oberkappel (Rohrbach district) fell almost 100 meters over a steep ice field on the Great Gosu Glacier on Tuesday morning and was seriously injured. He had been wearing crampons, but still lost his balance.
The day before, the mountaineer had already climbed the Adamekhütte in the municipality of Gosau. The next morning, shortly after 6:30, the man set off alone towards the 2,995-metre-high Dachstein. The path first leads clearly over rocky terrain and then pathless over the Gosu glacier. When crossing the glacier to the “Oberen Windlucke”, at the beginning of the western ridge towards the Dachstein, the man had to cross a steep field of empty ice.
Remains motionless
Despite using crampons, the climber lost his balance and fell uncontrollably almost 100 meters down the steep ice field. He rolled over at least once and remained motionless only in a washed-out gully in the glacier ice.
Two rope teams rushed to help
Two rope teams with a total of six people observed the incident, provided first aid to the victim and immediately alerted the emergency services. After initial treatment by the emergency doctor, the seriously injured man was flown with a rope to the intermediate landing site at the Adamekhütte and then to a hospital in Linz for further treatment.
