On Wednesday, the follow-up work after the devastating forest fire in Gänserndorf (Lower Austria) continues. There are currently 60 helpers on duty.
The emergency services were also “out all night long”. District fire chief Georg Schicker announced the next transfer at 2 p.m. The situation would be monitored on Thursday evening with a tanker and a drone.
A fire broke out in the hallway
On Monday afternoon, a field fire initially broke out, which then spread to a forest fire southeast of Gänserndorf. According to Schicker, an area of around 100 hectares was affected.
When the flames spread to a settlement and a stud farm, about twenty buildings were temporarily evacuated. This measure was also necessary because of the smoke pollution, it was said.
Discarded cigarette as possible cause of fire
The investigation into the cause of the fire is continuing. Police spokeswoman Manuela Weinkirn said when asked that it is assumed that a third-party ignition source was introduced through carelessness, such as carelessly throwing away a cigarette. There was no evidence of intent.
