Ricardo Ten was expanded this Wednesday to Paris Paralympic Games his extraordinary track record and, in the process, he removed a thorn that had stuck with him. At the Tokyo Games, things did not go well cycling time trialwhere he had a heat stroke. Three years later, he released it in gold in class C1 in the French capital.
“Many events happened in Tokyo beyond our control and here we have to seize the opportunity“, Ten had a lot on his mind after proving his victory. “We took advantage of it wonderfully, both in the track events, which we did not prepare with special dedication, and here,” he celebrated after crossing the line of graduation.
Time trial is their great goal in these Games. “This test was what we prepared for and it went perfectly. I want to thank my whole team, my coach Eloy Izquierdo. We understand each other. We know very well when to tighten and when to let go and I believe that he played a big part in that success,” he thanked. “I want to dedicate it to the family, to all the people who came to us. , to the sponsors, to the media in the coverage you give to the Games”, added the Valencian cyclist.
He has fulfilled his great wish. “Now all that’s left is to enjoy the rest.”he said before the online test after shining in the fight against the stopwatch. “This is a circuit that neither benefited me nor harmed me. There is a technical side that I can take advantage of a lot, but another area of power where, since I’m not strictly a time trialist, bigger people with more power can do more distance than me.“, explains Ten. “But we are working on it all very well in concentration in the Sierra Nevada, making a very difficult series. We have crossed the gap without any problem,” he celebrated.
Ten recounted how he experienced the ordeal. “We have the explosiveness and strength to endure from the beginning. I don’t even look at the stopwatch. In the first half it was a bit difficult for me to pick up the pace, but then we kept it until the end to far exceed my expectations in these Games,” he said. “We know there are options here, but we have track in the background and from the speed of the team it was a show and gave peace of mind,” he said.
A Paralympic swimmer extraordinaire, Ten’s transition to cycling in recent years has been equally productive for him. “I tried this discipline to try to have new challenges. I am especially excited to win cycling. I don’t think you can ask for more,” said an ecstatic Ricardo. “Road World Cup champion, although the track World Cup didn’t go the way we wanted. But the time to be good is now and the weather is a dream. I came for this test,” he said.
He already has. At 49 years old, Ricardo Ten has fulfilled his great dream. “I don’t think I have any cycling challenges anymore. “We have to continue enjoying what we do and the moment we stop enjoying it, it will be time to stop or change,” he concluded.
