A dangerous incident has occurred in the popular Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia, where a resident was attacked and injured by a bear while out hiking.
The incident took place late Friday night. The attacked 64-year-old said he had gone for a walk about 800 meters from his home, according to the television channel HRT. The animal ran towards him from a meadow, knocked him down, bit him and then ran away again. The resident was taken to the hospital. According to the information, the injuries are not serious.
Bear attacks are rare in Croatia
There are approximately 1,000 brown bears living in the wild in Croatia. Croatian nature conservation tries to keep conflicts between bears and humans as low as possible by measures such as monitoring, public relations, bear-proof manure tanks and population regulation by shooting. Therefore, it is rare for bears to attack humans in Croatia.
Plitvice Lakes National Park is a popular tourist destination with its picturesque waterfalls connecting the 16 lakes.
