Stone chipping assistance – drunk man (24) falls 100 meters on his motorcycle

Date:

The ride on an unregistered motorcycle ended fatally for a 24-year-old in East Tyrol: the young man, who was also drunk, drove the vehicle off a forest path and fell 100 meters down. He suffered serious injuries. A first responder was also hit and injured by a rolling stone.

The serious accident took place on Sunday around 17:45 in the municipality of Kartitsch. The 24-year-old local resident was riding the motorcycle, which was not registered for traffic, over a forest path from the village hill into the valley. He probably lost control in a left bend.

“He went over the edge of the path and only came to a stop after about 100 meters in very steep terrain full of rocks. Hikers went to the injured person and called 911,” police said.

Suddenly a stone came loose
As other hikers descended to the scene of the accident, a stone became loose and rolled towards the victim. “A 20-year-old Austrian woman tried to stop the stone, which caused her minor injuries,” it reads.

By helicopter to the hospital
Shortly afterwards, the alerted medical emergency helicopter and the mountain rescue arrived at the scene of the accident. After initial treatment on site, the seriously injured man was flown by helicopter to the Lienz district hospital. The injured woman was taken to hospital by ambulance.

“A breathalyzer test on the driver involved in the accident was positive. There was serious damage to the motorcycle,” the investigators concluded.
