They were cold, wet and then unreachable: two climbers from Germany launched an hour-long search in Tyrol’s Zillertal on Sunday evening. The couple was only found by emergency services after midnight.
The 36-year-old German and his companion (33) went on a climb to the 3,065-meter-high Grundschartner in the municipality of Brandberg on Sunday. Apparently the duo progressed slowly and was probably surprised by the weather.
Telephone instructions to acquaintances
“At around 6:15 p.m., the 36-year-old called a friend and told him that he was on the last pitch with his climbing partner, that it was already wet and cold and that the friend should alert mountain rescue if he didn’t get through. “I would report back at 9 p.m.,” police said.
The friend’s mobile phone remained silent. The German did not answer and could no longer be reached. “The acquaintance made an emergency call, after which a search was started by the mountain rescue and alpine police,” the investigators continued.
Couple found unharmed
Shortly before 1 a.m. there was a big sigh of relief: the couple was found unharmed by the emergency services at an altitude of almost 2,000 meters and taken to a nearby mountain pasture.
