North Korea wants to increase the number of nuclear weapons. As the state news agency KCNA reported, ruler Kim Jong-un said the stocks should be increased “exponentially.” Kim also accused “enemy” forces of wanting to attack North Korea with nuclear weapons.
Kim did not specify which countries he was referring to. He made the remarks Monday during a speech marking the founding day of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
North Korea has dozens of nuclear warheads
The Stockholm Peace Institute Sipri estimates that North Korea has around 50 nuclear warheads. However, this is only a rough estimate; the exact number is unknown. The country is subject to extensive UN sanctions and import bans because of its nuclear program. The last known nuclear test took place in 2017.
Closer cooperation with the Kremlin
Tensions on the Korean Peninsula have increased significantly in recent times. Over the past two years, North Korea has significantly expanded its missile tests and increased its rhetoric against the United States and South Korea. There has been increased military cooperation with Russia.
