In the case of the brutal murder of two homeless people in Vienna, the 18-year-old suspect is now accused of double murder. However, because the boy was a minor at the time of the crime, he will be tried as a minor.
It was a dramatic series of murders that shook Vienna in the summer of 2023, terrifying those to whom life had often been unkind. In the case of the homeless murders, charges are now being brought against the 18-year-old who – then 16 – turned himself in months after the killings. He is accused of killing two homeless men with a knife in July and August 2023. The boy is also alleged to have tried to kill a homeless woman.
The then 16-year-old turned himself in
The victims were attacked while they were sleeping and were killed with multiple stab wounds. In December 2023 – after police had launched extensive investigations and searches – the then 16-year-old turned himself in to authorities. He admits to all charges and cites anger, restlessness and grief as the motive for the crime.
In addition to the interrogation of the suspect, the seizure of the murder weapon, the evaluation of DNA traces on it and expert reports from forensic medicine led, among other things, to the filing of the indictment with the Vienna Regional Court for Criminal Cases as a juvenile jury, the Vienna Public Prosecutor’s Office announced on Tuesday.
Instructions requested
Since the suspect was a minor at the time of the crime, the penalty in this case for the crime of murder is one to fifteen years in prison. In addition, the Vienna Public Prosecutor’s Office has requested that the suspect be placed in a forensic therapeutic center.
According to an expert report, the boy was mentally healthy at the time of the crime, but there is a good chance that he will commit new crimes in the foreseeable future with serious consequences, the judicial authority said.
