A small van was literally braked on Friday in Pfaffstätten in Lower Austria. The driver must have greatly underestimated the height of his vehicle when he wanted to drive under a viaduct of the Vienna water main, and that too at considerable speed. He and his vehicle didn’t get very far, the body of the truck got stuck. It certainly wasn’t the first accident at this point.
According to the fire service, the driver probably drove too fast due to the force of the impact. The damage to the vehicle can hardly be explained otherwise. The body of the truck was partially torn away. Only walking speed is allowed in the underpass.
The transporter, which was completely wedged in, had to be recovered with a cable winch and was then parked in a parking lot.
Message boards are “continuously ignored”
There are numerous indications for the low height of the viaduct, but they are apparently hardly noticed. According to the Baden City Fire Brigade command, accidents keep happening at this point because the height limit – a maximum of three meters in the middle and 2.7 meters at the side – is ignored.
mayor speechless
Even a height regulation set up especially for this purpose and countless warning signs would not change anything, the mayor of Pfaffstätt, Christoph Kainz, was also annoyed. He was himself a member of the fire service in the high altitude debacle and can only shake his head.
For years there have been calls for the construction of an additional height control, he said. “Just if some vehicle drivers just don’t follow through or seem to ignore it, what else are you supposed to do,” Kainz says.
