Animal Ranger House – How the deer “George” got his dog mom

Date:

“Clooney” is the dog’s name and “George” is the deer’s name! For the young wild animal, the barking quadruped became a mother substitute. In a forest hut in the Waldviertel, the buck is already part of the family.

Animal fairy tales could come about in a similar way: One day, the dog stood in front of the door of Itha Walser-Lazarini’s forester’s hut. He had Bambi, who was only two days old, in tow. “My four-legged darling ‘Clooney’, a street dog rescued from Greece, must have sniffed out the newly placed deer and unfortunately licked it so thoroughly that ‘George’ recognized him as his mother,” recalls the landlady of the idyllic holiday home in the middle of the green pine trees at Langschlägerwald in the Zwettl district.

But all’s well that ends well! While the little forest dweller was initially a bit unsure about walking around the living room and kitchen, he now visits his “family” with peace of mind during regular walks.

A family member for 5 years now
“In the five years that he has lived with us, our George has become a real member of the family and regularly comes out of the forest. In the winter, he even lives with us,” assures the friendly hostess of the centuries-old house. For hunters in the area, the tame buck can be recognized by his typical collar. But Itha is convinced that the hunters would not damage the hair of her protégé in this way
