The predicted heavy rainfall over Austria has already led to the first safety closures of roads. The Sölkpass (L704) in Styria and the Großglockner High Alpine Road between the Ferleiten ticket office and Heiligenblut am Großglockner are affected, reports the ÖAMTC.

The motorway maintenance departments are also “prepared for every eventuality”, especially in the areas of the Tauern region, the Brenner motorway and the Arlberg motorway, Asfinag said in a press release.

Storms rage over eastern Austria
According to the current forecast, the focus of the rain will remain in southern Austria on Thursday and will shift further east on Friday.

Because the heavy rain will continue to move across the country in the coming days. The Austrian Severe Weather Center (UWZ) is currently warning of further heavy rainfall. Experts expect extreme amounts of rain, sometimes more than 250 l/m², in the eastern Northern Alps and in the Vienna Woods.

Mudslides and flooding, as well as snow-covered roads are expected. More storms are also possible this weekend.

Events cancelled
