Far-reaching consequences – bluetongue disease: first cases confirmed in the country

Date:

The first cases of a serious viral disease have now been confirmed in Austria. This is bluetongue disease. But don’t worry: there is no risk of infection for humans. For unvaccinated animals, however, infection can have far-reaching consequences!

The virus has already been confirmed in one cow in Vorarlberg and two cattle in Styria. The Federal Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection announced this on Thursday. These are the first cases in Austria since 2016. The virus affects sheep, cattle, goats and ruminant wild animals such as deer, roe deer and ibex. The disease is currently widespread in large parts of Europe, such as France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland.

Far-reaching consequences in case of contamination
Although there is no risk of infection for humans – neither through contact with sick animals nor through dairy products and meat – infection can have serious consequences for animals…

Fever and swelling of the head
In a cow in Vorarlberg, aggressive serotype 3 was confirmed. It leads to serious illnesses and a large number of deaths, especially in sheep. Cattle also show clear symptoms of this virus variant and a sharp drop in milk production. Sick animals show fever and swelling of the head and mouth, which can lead to the death of the animal. The two cases in Styria are of serotype 4, which has led to significantly fewer symptoms of the disease so far.

But how is infection possible in the first place? Bluetongue disease (BT) is transmitted by blood-sucking mosquitoes, which also occur in Austria. Vaccination can protect animals from serious diseases. Although complete protection cannot be guaranteed, it slows the progression of the disease and thus prevents animal suffering.

It is also advisable to keep the animals in the stable during the evening and morning hours, because mosquitoes are particularly active then.
