A top meteorologist is sharply critical of the weather forecasts of the ORF in Lower Austria. The reason: Shortly before an impending flood disaster, an ORF TV presenter described the weather as “relatively dull”. “If people die in Lower Austria, the ORF will also have them on their conscience”, the expert warned against a dangerous trivialization.
On Friday morning, the highest warning level was declared in some Austrian regions by the Austrian Severe Weather Center. In Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Styria and also Vienna, the day started with heavy and partly icy rain.
There is no talk of the threat of flooding
There is no sign of this dramatic situation in the weather report of “Niederösterreich Today” from Thursday evening. “Brrr… quite cold,” moderator Clemens Krautzer begins the post humorously. In parts of Lower Austria, a total of 300 liters per square meter can be expected. “That is a lot,” he explains briefly and concisely.
Meteorologist Jörg Kachelmann then described those responsible at ORF Lower Austria as “criminals” and linked the article:
The state warning center in Lower Austria also sees the situation somewhat. The highest flood warning level 3 was issued. But there is no mention in the ORF report of impending flooding.
“They act as if 300 millimeters of rain is just a minor inconvenience, not a word about the consequences and a minor insult, it will soon be over,” says Kachelmann, irritated that the population is not given sufficient protection in the ORF NÖ report. It warns of the consequences of the amounts of water.
In some places there is a risk that flooding could last up to thirty years
According to the forecast, a five-year (HQ5) to ten-year (HQ10) flood is expected on the Danube. Events lasting up to 30 years (HQ30) may even occur on the tributaries; in some areas it may also be more severe.
In these articles you can see the preparations of the fire brigades in Grafenwörth and Grub am Wienerwald:
In threatened areas, such as Melk, hundreds of sandbags have already been prepared to be prepared against the water masses. Several events planned for the weekend have been canceled, including the Wachau Marathon.
