Two dogs dead in Lower Austria – bacteria in the Leitha as a danger to dogs?

Date:

A swim in the Leitha near Sommerein in Lower Austria may have been fatal to two dogs. There are no reports of sick animals in Burgenland yet.

It is believed that in the quieter part of the Leitha, blue-green algae or other bacteria in the water have formed in the summer, which are responsible for the diseases of some dogs. Affected four-legged friends cough, have diarrhea and also suffer from vomiting. The vet couldn’t do anything for two dogs in Lower Austria, they died from their disease.

Dog owners in Burgenland delivered
A water sample has now been taken in Lower Austria. The Bruck an der Leitha district administration is currently waiting for the results. There are no incidents in Burgenland, but dog owners are concerned. This is apparent, for example, from the mentions under the warning of a veterinary practice in Sommerein on Facebook.

Christian Skarits of the water monitoring department only learned of the incident via social media. “We are in close contact with our Lower Austrian colleagues,” he explains. “There are currently no known incidents on the Burgenland side. If something happens here too, we will respond.”
