Venezuela warns Spanish ambassador it will not allow any “interference”

Date:

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil described the words of Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles as “brutal, meddlesome and rude.”

Spain’s ambassador in Caracas, Ramón Santos, met on Friday with Venezuela’s Foreign Minister Yván Gil after being summoned for consultations, as Nicolás Maduro’s executive considers that there has been a deterioration in relations due to the “interference” by members of Pedro Sánchez’s government in the affairs of the Caribbean country, which he “will not allow”.

According to a note Gil shared on Telegram, during the meeting the chancellor told the diplomat that Venezuela will not allow any interventionist action by the Spanish government in matters that fall under the exclusive responsibility of Venezuelans.

“The Government of Venezuela, within the framework of international law and Bolivarian peace diplomacy, will take the necessary measures to protect its sovereignty,” the Foreign Minister’s note said.

Santos attended the meeting at the Foreign Ministry headquarters in Caracas, at the request of Gil, who described the previous day as “rude, meddlesome and rude” the statements of the Spanish Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, for whom the Maduro government is a “dictatorship”.

The Maduro director, Gil explained on Thursday, also called his Accredited Ambassador to Spain, Gladys Gutiérrezwhose arrival in Venezuela was scheduled for this Friday afternoon.

The Spanish executive, for its part, chose to reduce the escalation of open tensions between Caracas and Madrid, describing the Chavista government’s decision to summon Santos and label his representative in the Spanish capital for consultations as “sovereign”.

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares stressed the desire to search for “the best possible relationships with the brotherly people of Venezuela” and to safeguard the interests of the community and national companies in the Latin American country.

The tension between the two countries arises after the Spanish Congress, with the vote against the ruling Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) and with the positive vote of PP, Vox and PNV, among others, agreed to recognize the elections of the elected president. On July 28, the figurehead of the majority opposition, Edmundo González Urrutia, has been exiled to the Spanish state since Sunday, where he has requested asylum.
