Iran has launched a satellite into space on behalf of the Revolutionary Guards. A launch vehicle brought the 60-kilogram research satellite “Chamran-1” into orbit at an altitude of 550 kilometers, according to the state broadcaster IRIB. The first signals have already been received.
“Chamran-1” pursues only scientific goals, it was stressed. The Islamic Republic has already launched several satellites into space to collect data on weather, natural disasters and agriculture.
Tehran claims that its satellite program does not have military objectives. However, since the program is led and implemented by the IRGC, there are international doubts about this story.
The Revolutionary Guard is de facto the second armed force of the country and is considered much more influential and powerful than the classical army. In addition to various military tasks at home and abroad, the IRGC also controls Iran’s space program.
