It is raining and raining in Upper Austria and Salzburg. The state fire brigade commandos had to deal with a number of smaller operations up to and including Saturday morning. So far, the unanimous opinion of both states is that they have gotten off lightly.
From Thursday to Saturday morning, there were 72 operations in the state of Salzburg, which were managed by 613 troops from 43 fire brigades. On Saturday, Flachgau was particularly affected. In Upper Austria, fourteen missions had to be carried out in the night from Friday to Saturday, spread across the country.
The hydrographic service reported rising water levels on the Inn and Danube, as well as on the Enns. The warning limits in Mauthausen and Schärding were to be exceeded on Saturday afternoon and in Linz on Sunday morning. Flood barriers were built. Local flooding of small and medium-sized bodies of water is possible everywhere, according to a press release on Saturday morning.
The Enns in Steyr had already exceeded the warning limit and was still rising. The city urged people to avoid riverbank areas, remove cars from potential flood zones, close basement windows and clean drains. Emergency sandbags are available from the city’s municipal utilities.
In Linz, the Traun cycle path under the Ebelsberg Traun Bridge was closed as a precaution, as was the Freistädter Straße/Linzer Straße pedestrian underpass.
Removing trees from the streets, pumping out flooded cellars, setting up flood protection and also freeing vehicles from the snow in Salzburg – these were the tasks.
