Attacks off Yemen – Houthi militia attacks two merchant ships again

Date:

Yemen’s Houthi rebels attacked two ships in the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean on Monday morning. A militia spokesman said the attacks were carried out with unmanned surface boats and cruise missiles.

The Houthi militia said the attacked ships belonged to companies that had violated “the ban on access to the ports of occupied Palestine.” The US military confirms the attacks. There are said to be no injuries to the U.S. and coalition ships.

CENTCOM: “Moderate damage”
The Greek freighter Transworld Navigato was hit with an unmanned aerial system (UAS) in the attack. “At 4 a.m. today (Sanaa time), the crew reported minor injuries and moderate damage to the ship, but the ship continued its journey,” said the US Central Command (CENTCOM), which is responsible for the Middle East.

Another incident occurred 246 nautical miles (455 kilometers) southeast of the Yemeni city of Nishtun, the British Maritime Trade Authority (UKMTO) wrote on X (formerly Twitter; see post below) on Monday.

The Houthi rebels, who control large parts of Yemen’s Red Sea coast, have been attacking ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden since November. According to its own statements, the Islamist militia wants to use the attacks to support its ally Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

The US military withdraws aircraft carriers
After several months of operations in response to the Hamas attack on Israel, the United States has withdrawn the aircraft carrier Dwight D. Eisenhower from the Red Sea. The ship and its accompanying group are on their way back to the US, CENTCOM said on Saturday.

The Eisenhower will be replaced by the aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt and its association, which is reportedly still in the Indo-Pacific and is expected to arrive in the region this week, according to the US.
