The past few days have been more than just demanding: hundreds of emergency locations and fire departments across the country have been deployed. The fire department in Salzburg can currently breathe a sigh of relief – before the next rain shower arrives. In addition, many roads are still closed: the “Krone” provides an overview. And the avalanche danger remains.
These were tough days and hours for the Salzburg emergency services. While the mountain rescue team had to record one death due to the snow masses and several operations in the Alps, the fire brigade was constantly in action.
The state fire department headquarters registered a total of 398 missions as of 5 a.m. Monday morning. 76 departments with a total of 1,793 personnel went out to pump out basements, clean streets, fill and distribute sandbags or set up local flood protection.
The most important roadblocks in a row
Flachgau and Tennengau were particularly affected by the rain, although the situation is much less tense than in eastern Austria. Snow was the biggest problem in the inland mountains. Mudslides or trees breaking under the weight of the snow lead to road closures throughout the country.
The “Krone” has summarized the most important closures (from 8 a.m., according to the Salzburg police) for you:
- Tennengau: L107, Wiestal Landesstraße, compensatory basin area –
Total closure due to mudslide - Pinzgau: B164, Hochkönigstrasse, Filzensattel area –
Total closure due to fallen trees - Pongau: B164, Hochkönigstrasse, Dientner Sattel area –
Total closure due to fallen trees - Flachgau: L108, Gaisberg Landesstraße –
Total closure due to fallen trees
No end in sight
An end to the lockdowns cannot be predicted at the moment. The weather forecast for Monday is even more relaxed in the morning. The water levels remain constant and in some places also drop. The rain is expected to become heavier around noon. Full relaxation is not expected until Wednesday, until then increased caution applies.
Avalanche danger in the mountains
“We strongly advise against ski tours and hikes in snow-covered high mountains,” the regional manager of the Salzburg mountain rescue service, Balthasar Laireiter, reported this weekend. This situation has not changed since then.
Avalanche warning services recorded up to 150 centimeters of fresh snow at high altitudes. “In the coming days, you can expect snow slides or avalanches from steep embankments at any time on forest and hiking trails,” Laireiter warned.
