Since the survey began, more people have gone to work sick than ever before. It is also worrying that, according to their own statements, a significant proportion of people are unlikely to keep their jobs until retirement; the pressure is too high.
Almost 60 percent of employees go to work sick, according to the current work climate index of the Chamber of Labor (AK). This is a high number since the start of the research in 2008. One reason is the increase in working from home: when working from home, 61 percent of respondents said they had worked while sick, while for all others this was ‘only’ 53 percent.
55 percent of respondents cited a sense of responsibility towards their colleagues as a reason for working despite health restrictions (“presenteeism”). In addition, almost 40 percent worry that their work will otherwise be postponed and 32 percent say they have had no representation.
Differences between the sexes
“Presenteeism” also shows gender-specific differences: almost 60 percent of female employees do not want to let their colleagues down, while for men it is 52 percent. “Moreover, this pressure is particularly high in the health and social sector and in retail, which is not surprising since the share of women is also high here,” the AK said in a press release on Tuesday.
It is striking that those who went to work while sick were particularly under time pressure. “There is no room for pressure here,” emphasized AKOÖ chairman Andreas Stangl, referring to another point of the work climate index: “Almost 40 percent of employees who work while sick believe that it is unlikely that they will stay in their job until retirement. An alarming comparison with 28 percent for other employees.”
