The heavy rain continues to keep the federal capital in suspense. The Danube narrowly missed a hundred-year flood, the Vienna River even a thousand-year flood! What is the atmosphere like right on the Danube? kroon.tv was there and asked.
Vienna-Nußdorf, empty streets, the cycle paths completely under water, barriers and a few walkers.
Some take pictures. Because of the water level, an innkeeper says she is wearing rubber boots: “Yesterday I would have needed a boat.”
“We get drunk every time”
And further: “Every time we get drunk in Nußdorf, Kuchelau, Kahlenbergerdorf. They don’t think about us.” She criticizes the approach to the inlet structure – which relieves the pressure on the main stream – on the Danube Island, because it is not fully utilized.
Trust the city of Vienna
At the corner where the canal flows into the Danube, a couple walks with their border collie amid the chaos. They trust in crisis management: “The city will know what to do,” they say confidently about the current safety measures, such as barriers at the river. But for acquaintances in the Kamptal in Lower Austria, it is approaching the floods of 2002, the situation is “of course quite tight.”
Memories of 1954
A pensioner looks curiously at the water mass. The elderly gentleman likes to walk here. The situation reminds him of the floods of 1954, which he experienced as a little boy: “everything on Nußdorfer Platz was under water.” Nowadays it is less dramatic in Vienna – partly thanks to the second regulation of the Danube – but still “bad enough” for the gentleman. He also invested 3,000 euros in flood protection. When it rains heavily, his street turns into a “raging torrent.”
In response to Chancellor Nehammer’s call not to engage in “disaster tourism” in these difficult times, the pensioner advises: “There are always crazy people kayaking along the Vienna River or riding their bikes through the water, I can do that. Less recommended at the moment.”
