An 84-year-old driver ignored a roadblock in Helpfau-Uttendorf (Upper Austria) on Tuesday and drove onto a flooded road. With fatal consequences: his vehicle was caught by the strong current and pushed against a bridge. Two teenagers (17) were his rescuers.
Water on the road and a roadblock did not stop an 84-year-old from Helpfau-Uttendorf in the Innviertel from driving his car onto the closed municipal road Mattigthal on Tuesday evening. The Mattig River, which had burst its banks, hit the car, pushed it away and eventually pushed it into a bridge.
Good luck in bad luck
The pensioner could not free himself from his car due to the flooding water. His great luck this Tuesday were two 17-year-old friends from Helpfau-Uttendorf.
Young people as rescuers
The teens happened to be passing by and responded quickly, immediately calling 911 while the 84-year-old’s car was almost completely submerged in water.
The emergency services that were called out were able to rescue the pensioner from the vehicle. The fire brigade and the towing company were then able to recover the partially submerged car. The rescue team and the emergency doctor attended to the 84-year-old on the spot, who fortunately remained unharmed, apart from a huge shock.
The elderly man is now being reported to the Braunau district administration for ignoring the roadblock.
