Many people fear for their survival after the flood disaster. In many cases, insurance payments are just a drop in the ocean. In order to better help the people here, Burgenland Governor Hans Peter Doskozil is calling for a nationwide disaster insurance.
The hail insurance financed by the federal government, the states and farmers should serve as a model for this. The SPÖ politician explained on Wednesday that the money from the disaster fund would only cover part of the damage caused.
Doskozil referred to the flood aid that the state introduced after the storms in the Oberwart district in June, and which now also applies to those currently affected. In the private sector, damage of up to 150,000 euros is covered, with insurance payments or a deductible of 10,000 euros deducted. Five million euros of the estimated ten million euros in damage caused by the June floods has already been paid out.
Doskozil combines proposal with criticism of government
But “we won’t be able to do that every year.” “That’s why the federal government would be obliged to introduce a statutory insurance for private individuals against disasters, similar to hail insurance for farmers. That would be the right way to go,” the governor said. The need for this has been demonstrated by the experiences from the Oberwart district in June and currently from Lower Austria. The suffering caused by the storms could at least be covered by insurance. Doskozil criticized the fact that the federal government “does not even come up with such ideas in the time before the elections,” Doskozil criticized.
“This is a joke”
He also pushed for a VAT exemption for fire brigades: “The demand is on the table and has never been implemented.” This was “a joke,” the governor said angrily.
