69.90 euros savings – bang in Lower Austria: tax on the ORF allowance is falling

Date:

With the planned abolition of the GIS fee as of April 1, 2024, there will also be movement in the issue of the ORF state fee. Lower Austria announced on Sunday that it would no longer levy state tax from that moment on. According to provincial governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner, this means annual savings of 69.90 euros for the individual.

The state tax, which is the responsibility of the individual federal states, is currently 5.80 euros per month in Lower Austria. Upper Austria and Vorarlberg have already waived this and Salzburg is considering waiving the surcharge in the future.

In total, the Lower Austrians would be relieved by almost 41 million euros, it said. That was “a noticeable relief for the compatriots,” Mikl-Leitner said in the broadcast. LH deputy Udo Landbauer (FPÖ) spoke about the “ORF compulsory levy at state level” being abolished.

Currently, 70 percent of the state tax in Lower Austria is used for culture and 30 percent for sports. After the abolition of the state tax, the subsidies for culture and sport will be financed entirely from the general state budget.

In Upper Austria and Vorarlberg, no state tax is added to the ORF fee. And it will remain so, the two states announced. There, the ORF contribution will be around 15.20 euros from 2024 instead of the current 22.45 euros.
