Animal rescuers are increasingly being called upon to cope with the higher temperatures. This is mainly due to the fact that the longer periods of drought make it more difficult for wild animals to obtain their natural food. This is especially noticeable in hedgehogs.
The newest addition to the animal shelter in Krems is only half a palm in size. The orphaned baby hedgehog was discovered by an observant passer-by, without whose animal rescue call the cub would have surely died. Nurses are now carefully feeding the little one.
“It’s too dry”
But as cute as the spiky friend is, he competes with many other creatures for the workers’ rare time. Above all, many wild animals in need exceed the capabilities of the animal shelter. The frequent periods of drought are also to blame for this. “Wild animals find less and less natural food because it is too dry. We see that a lot with hedgehogs at the moment,” says Andrea Specht of the animal shelter, who therefore appeals to garden owners: “A shallow bowl of water and some cat food would help.”
Baby Kestrel Crashed
At least as needy as the hedgehog was a baby kestrel who must have fallen from the nest of a church steeple. The Krems animal rescue service was also there quickly. After a few days at a vet, he is now learning everything he needs in the wild from a nursing bird. “He is developing fantastic”, they say happily.
