In the mega-trial in Avignon concerning the drugging and rape of French woman Gisele Pelicot (72), more and more horrific details are coming to light dozens of times. A co-defendant, who had abused the woman together with the main defendant, had done the same to his own wife.
For years, Gisele Pelicot was drugged with sleeping pills by her husband Dominique Pelicot and also given to other men for sexual abuse. One of the fifty co-defendants in the spectacular case testified in court. Jean-Pierre M. (63) had abused his own wife in the same way as the main defendant – and this according to his instructions and with his participation.
The main defendant provided sleeping pills
“What I did is terrible. I expect a severe punishment,” said Jean-Pierre M. “I am a criminal and a rapist,” he added. He is suspected of having drugged his wife with a sleeping pill given to him by Dominique Pelicot between 2015 and 2018 and then raped her with Pelicot.
Victim of co-defendant woke up several times
M. said the two met on an internet forum called “Without Their Knowledge”. Pelicot initially suggested that he rape his wife Gisele, but he refused. He then tried Pelicot’s approach on his own wife. However, she woke up several times and noticed Pelicot.
The researchers discovered at least twelve cases of rape, most of which were filmed. Pelicot participated in ten of them.
M. reported abuse in his own youth
“If I hadn’t met Mr. Pelicot, this wouldn’t have happened,” M. said in court. Pelicot reminded him of his father, he added. M. went on to describe numerous sexual atrocities committed by his father. During his childhood, he forced him to perform oral sex and abused his sister. “We went through bad things with my father,” he said.
Victim: “He was such a great man”
His wife Cilia M. had already testified last week that she had not filed a lawsuit against her husband ‘to protect our five children’. “It is unbelievable what he did, he was such a great man”, she said. She will “never forgive him”.
Gisele Pelicot receives applause in court
Gisele Pelicot was greeted with applause again in the courthouse on Wednesday. The 72-year-old has now become a feminist icon in France. She explicitly pleaded for the trial not to take place behind closed doors, “so that shame changes sides.”
