The Volksgarten is one of the drug hotspots in Graz. After complaints from residents, it was declared a protection zone in July. The results so far: impressive. But the problem has moved to the nearby Metahofpark. Now it’s getting serious there.
It was massive complaints from residents and the exploding number of drug offences that forced the police into action in the summer: the authorities ordered the establishment of a protection zone in the Volksgarten in Graz. “It is specifically about the protection of minors, that is, young people under the age of 18,” emphasises Brigadier General Thomas Heiland, police commander of the city of Graz. “There, effective action can be taken against dangerous people.”
In principle, the density of controls in the Volksgarten was very high even before the regulation. “In essence, we have remained at the high level,” says Heiland, “but expanded with the additional legal possibilities that the protection zone offers.”
