The owner of the Rieder Hütte (Upper Austria) urgently warns against alpine excursions. After the erratic weather of last week, there is still up to two meters of snow on the local peaks. But the ground is much too warm, which makes the risk of avalanches high.
The wonderful late summer weather makes the floods of the past few days fade into the background in many places. Discussions are already taking place on various online forums about whether mountain hikes would be possible again. Many people seem to forget that this can be accompanied by considerable dangers. “It’s not worth it, stay down there,” says Stephan Jobke, landlord of the Rieder Hütte in the Höllengebirge. “We advise everyone not to go and are closed so that no one is encouraged to come up,” says the mountain hiking guide.
Sinkholes – Invisible Traps
At the moment, there is still between 70 and 120 centimetres of snow on ‘his’ hut at around 1700 metres above sea level, which is only slowly disappearing. This brings with it a number of dangers: “The snow has fallen on warm ground, which increases the risk of sliding snow avalanches,” says the mountain expert and adds: “The white is also lying over sinkholes. Especially inexperienced hikers do not know where these are. If they step on them, it can go up to twenty metres deep.” Therefore, the Rieder Hütte is expected to remain closed until next Thursday. Current information can be found on the website.
Rockfall at Schoberstein
The Goiserer Hütte in the Salzkammergut is also closed. Online, we strongly advise against climbing due to the current dangers; the hut is unoccupied until September 22. At the Schobersteinhaus at 1260 meters altitude in the foothills of the Alps, things look different. “We only had 20 centimeters of snow, which has now melted. After a rockfall, the forest road and the Dorngraben hiking trail are temporarily closed, but all other climbs are possible,” says hut manager Stephan Zeilermayr. It has been open as normal again since Wednesday.
Nepalese cleared the way
Innkeepers Sandra Peitli and Andreas Dengg also reopened the snow-covered Christophorushütte on the Feuerkogel on Thursday. The Himalaya-experienced Nepalese employees Sonam Sherpa, Pasang Sherpa and Dawa Sherpa scoop up everything. But there are also dangers in the valley, such as in the popular Pesenbachtal in Feldkirchen/D. The paths are closed due to the risk of falling rocks and mud flows.
Shipping further limited
In recent days, the water has only slowly receded from the lakes. In order to prevent damage to the coastal area and buildings by waves, the district administration of Vöcklabruck has imposed a shipping ban on the Attersee until 21 September at 12:00.
